In this blog we aim to answer some of the most burning questions you have about your home Internet connection speed.
First off, Xplore customers can easily find out what Internet speeds they subscribe to by logging in to their MyXplore account at any time. You can search online for available third-party speedtest services to test your Internet speed.
Your Internet speed needs will vary depending on the number of connected devices in your household, and people using them, as well as the type of activities you use your Internet for.
For instance, to stream on one device in full HD on Netflix, you would need 5 Mbps download speeds. If you’ve got 3 people in your household streaming on 3 separate devices, you’re now looking at 15 Mbps. The number of Internet users and the number of devices are always important factors to consider when considering your residential Internet needs.
In their recent article, What is a Good Internet Speed in Canada WhistleOut said, “According to the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), "good internet speed" is any broadband connection that can download at least 50 megabits per second (Mbps).”
Download speed refers to how quickly data can travel from Xploret’s or another Internet service provider’s network to your home.
Xplore is upgrading and building new towers all the time and now offers download speeds up to 100 Mbps with unlimited data usage.
Here is the approximate amount of speed you’d need to do each Internet-connected activity.
Activity | Speed Needed |
---|---|
Web Browsing Social Media Light Video | 10 Mbps+ |
Above plus HD video streaming and sharing | 25 Mbps+ |
Above plus online gaming and video conferencing | 50 Mbps+ |
Above plus 4K video streaming and large file sharing/game downloads | 100 Mbps+ |
Also take note that while a fast download speed is useful for a wide variety of activities, a high upload speed is also important for conferencing and gaming.
Doug Caldwell, a customer from Campbellford, Ontario upgraded his download and upload speeds.
“I’ve been with Xplore 11 years. Recently they upgraded my tower. Speeds are great now,” he said in a Facebook comment.
