Check out, Reliable Internet: A Lifeline for Rural LGBTQ2S+ Communities Xplore’s Pride 2024 customer highlight for another inspiring story. This year, we’re proud to spotlight Xplore customer Eugene Dustin.

In the heart of London, Ontario, Eugene has been a beacon of hope and leadership for the LGBTQ2S+ community. As the former President of Pride London, Eugene's journey is a testament to resilience, advocacy, and the power of community. Eugene was honored with the Canadian Caring Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to volunteerism and the LGBTQ2S+ community. We had the privilege of speaking with Eugene about his experiences, his award, and his experience as an Xplore Internet subscriber.

A Journey of Leadership and Advocacy

Eugene's involvement with Pride London began in 2003 when he joined the board as treasurer. His dedication and vision soon led him to the role of President, where he served for four and a half years. His passion for advancing the organization and his innovative ideas made him a natural fit for leadership.

Recognizing Excellence in Volunteerism

Winning the Canadian Caring Award was a significant milestone for Eugene. "It meant a lot to be appreciated. There’s lots of times you do something, and you wonder if it’s noticed. It was a great honour to receive it," Eugene shares. Officially named the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award at its inception in 1995, this award is now known as the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers. This medal recognizes individuals who have made a significant, sustained, and unpaid contribution to their community, either in Canada or abroad. It's an official honour within the Canadian Honours System, presented by the monarch of Canada.

Pride and Personal Journey

Eugene's journey as an LGBTQ2S+ person has been marked by challenges and triumphs. "My teenage years were in the 70s and 80s. Back then it was a way different situation. You pretty much had to comply. In the late 90s I said to myself, I can’t do this anymore. I have to be me," Eugene reflects. Eugene’s coming out story is one of courage and acceptance, with his family and community standing by him, but he recognized, with gratitude, that not everyone in his community was so lucky.

Retiring in Style with Xplore Internet

Since retiring from Pride London, Eugene spends more and more time at his favourite place; his seasonal trailer in Southwestern Ontario. He relies on Xplore Internet for connectivity and says that the extra comforts having high-speed Internet affords makes his vacation property a true home away from home. "Xplore had the best options available, so I said I’ll give it a try and I haven’t regretted it at all," Eugene says. The reliable Internet service has made a significant difference in his daily life, allowing him to stay connected and enjoy entertainment on rainy days.

Life in Rural Areas

Eugene's experience living in a rural area as an LGBTQ2S+ person has been positive. "It is a family campground and everybody is very kind. We have the flag up with the rainbow and the maple leaf on it and everyone is very accepting," Eugene shares.

Supporting Pride London and the LGBTQ2S+ Community

Eugene encourages everyone to support their local Pride organization and the LGBTQ2S+ community. "Show up at the festival. Make sure you support the sponsors of the festival because they support the community. And most important of all be accepting of everybody – we're all human.”

Eugene's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of community, advocacy, and acceptance. His leadership and dedication to Pride London have made a lasting impact, and his recognition with the Canadian Caring Award is well-deserved. At Xplore, we are proud to support individuals like Eugene who make a difference in their communities. Happy Pride and happy surfing rural Canada!
