Introducing Troy, the president and owner-operator of Cumberland Satellite who spends his days getting Atlantic Canadians connected to better, faster Internet through Xplore! Troy starts his day at 6 am, ensuring his team is ready and equipped for the day ahead. His role is multifaceted, involving everything from dispatching his team to jumping into the field himself. Troy and his team’s dedication to their work is evident as they travel across southeastern New Brunswick and the nose of Nova Scotia, meeting customers and ensuring their needs are met. Since 2006, Troy has been at the helm of Cumberland Satellite, a role he cherishes deeply.
Troy’s journey began in 2003 when he started installing satellites for a company after moving back to Eastern Canada. When that company closed, Troy saw an opportunity and reached out to Xplore. Starting as a one-person show in 2006, he has since grown his team to include four full-time and one part-time employee. His passion for the job and the joy of helping customers have kept him going for 21 years. “It’s rewarding,” Troy says, “I love to greet customers, help them, it puts a smile on their face.”
Originally from Springhill, Nova Scotia, Troy moved out west at 18 but eventually returned to the East Coast, settling in Grand Barachois, New Brunswick. Living in a rural community near the border of Nova Scotia allows him to service both provinces. Troy and his wife Annie enjoy the quiet rural life, surrounded by elderly neighbors and the occasional visit from their grandchildren and sons. The peaceful environment and close-knit community are what he loves most about living and working in these areas.
Cumberland Satellite is committed to making a positive impact in the areas they serve. Whether it’s sponsoring local sports teams, supporting community events, or ensuring that everyone has access to the best internet service, they are dedicated to making a difference.
This summer, they sponsored the under-14 girls’ baseball team, the Fencebusters, in Springhill. They also support the local car show, advertise at the hockey rink, and sponsor a local MMA fighter who trained in Japan. Troy believes in supporting local businesses and young athletes, contributing to the community wherever possible.
This summer, the Fencebusters made history as the first all-female team to don the locally revered baseball team name. Hailing from Amherst, Oxford, and Springhill, these young athletes carried on the storied legacy of the Fencebusters, a team steeped in the rich baseball heritage of Springhill and Nova Scotia. Competing in Nova Scotia’s U14 female Bluenose league, they prepared for the provincial championship tournament held in late August.
Troy reflects on the team’s success, saying, “Seeing the girls win the provincial championship was incredible. Our support made up 25% of their costs this year, which helped ensure that every girl who wanted to play got on the field. It’s moments like these that make our community involvement so rewarding.”
Dan, the assistant coach of the Fencebusters, adds, “As a Springhiller, I’m so happy to say that Fencebusters is now a name for both male and female teams. I can’t thank you enough for your donations to the team. That was a huge help and allowed us to reduce costs to ensure girls that otherwise might not get to play, got on the field..”
Having a local dealer like Cumberland Satellite means customers receive faster service and support. Troy emphasizes the importance of being nearby to address technical issues promptly. Supporting local businesses also strengthens the community, and Troy and his team appreciate the trust and support from their customers.
Customers in rural areas often have limited service options, but Xplore’s enhanced Internet network with speeds up to 100 Mbps and truly unlimited data have been a game-changer. Troy is fulfilled daily by connecting his community to reliable Internet. He recalled a recent visit where he provided a customer with 100 Mbps, meeting her specific needs and leaving her delighted. Another customer needed a stable connection for her son to communicate with his doctor regularly. And, Robin’s Restaurant and Needs in Port Elgin, benefited from uninterrupted service for their debit machines, ensuring smooth operations.
Troy is excited about the future. “Xplore is not just committed to providing great internet today; they are investing in the future to ensure it gets even better and faster.” Xplore’s dedication to innovation means constantly exploring new technologies and infrastructure improvements to bring the best possible internet experience to customers. We believe that everyone deserves access to high-speed, reliable internet, and we are working tirelessly to make that a reality. Even faster speeds are on the horizon.
Troy stressed that in today’s world, reliable internet is crucial, especially for those working from home. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted this need, making 2020 one of the busiest years for Cumberland Satellite. Ensuring that everyone has a dependable connection is a responsibility Troy takes seriously, knowing it helps people put food on the table.
Cumberland Satellite, under Troy’s leadership, continues to thrive by prioritizing customer satisfaction, community involvement, and reliable service. Their story is a testament to the impact of local businesses in rural areas.
