Canada is big

Really big. About 7,250 km from coast-to-coast. That’s a lot of ground to cover, and a lot of different climates. Now let’s consider that one of our 4G satellites is currently in a geosynchronous orbit 35,888 kilometers above sea-level. When you’re online with Xplore’s satellite service, you probably know that you’re pulling your signal from a satellite in the sky. But what you may not know is that your satellite signal needs to make a stop at a gateway on land before it gets to you.

Xplore has gateways all across the country to give us the best line-of-sight to the satellite. For example, if you’re in Ardmore, Alberta, the gateway that serves your satellite beam is in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

While our satellite Internet service is built for life in Canada, there are times when the weather can get extreme – even if you’re not around to see it. In our example above, if there’s a strong storm pushing it’s way up the Eastern seaboard, it’s possible that the satellite signal between the gateway and the satellite could be interrupted by heavy rain, snow, or whatever else Mother Nature throws our way. Even if it’s bright and sunny in Ardmore, you could still experience degraded service due to weather.

Light Rain

Normal rain should not affect satellite Internet service. However, if your Xplore dish is not aligned correctly to the satellite, the signal may be too weak to withstand the fade.

Heavy Rain/Thunderstorms

As we mentioned, very heavy rain and thunderstorms can block a satellite signal completely. If a signal passes through a distant storm, like between the gateway and the satellite, the service can be interrupted even if it isn’t raining in your area.

Snow and Ice

Snow may also weaken the satellite Internet signal to a degree that actually disrupts service. If snow piles up on your Xplore dish, it can completely block the signal. Condensation from melting snow can accumulate on a dish and form ice that blocks that signal even in clear weather.


Strong winds can bend or move your Xplore dish so that it’s no longer aligned with the satellite. Severe wind storms can even move our own gateway dishes!
