The most common causes for this are:

  • Older phone sets
  • Lower-cost or novelty phone sets
  • Faulty phone jacks or wall plates
  • Faulty telephone wiring

Older phone sets can deteriorate with age and use. The phone cord/cable connecting the phone to the wall jack/plate can fail along with the spiral cord connecting the handset to the phone set. The internal components can also deteriorate with age, which can lead to these types of problems.

Lower-cost or novelty sets are generally designed and produced as cheaply as possible and the quality of the parts and construction can lead to unwanted noise, hum and static.

The easiest way to check if the problem is with a phone or a jack/wall plate is to simply try another phone on that outlet, if it works fine then the phone set was at fault.

If the problem persists, try that phone on another outlet.

If it works fine, the phone is working properly then the original outlet is at fault.

If the phone still exhibits the problems, try replacing the phone cord and spiral cord, if you have a spare, to see if it remedies the issue.

If the problem has not resolved by changing phones, locations and cords/cables then there may be a problem with the phone wiring within the household. This is quite common, especially in older homes as there may have been many years of changes to the telephone wiring.

If the above troubleshooting steps have not resolved the issue, you may require an on-site visit by a technician to inspect and diagnose the issue to find the source of the fault.
